The Best Montreal Restaurant in Each and Every Category!

A Gigantic List of Montreal Restaurants is something I'm never able to find...

So I decided to build my own list. I give this list to friends and family visiting from out of town.

There are always those special restaurants in a vacation, that are not just special, they are "super special" -- So outstanding that you would go back to Montreal just for the food!

I turned to Montrealers, tourists, and the Montreal Mirror polls (a local newspaper) for inspiration on the best places. I set some criteria, opened up my mouth and stomach, and drafted this list.

This is the best of the best. The Magic of a Montreal Smoked Meat, the creme-de-la-creme of Chinatown, Montreal's finest pizza and sushi place (and pizza sushi place!).

Enough talk! Without further ado, here is the Most Complete and Best Montreal Restaurant List ever assembled...

    Best B"eh"gel

Ah, the Montreal bagel! Italy has pizza and China's got the fortune cookie, but Montreal's got the bagel!

Mmmm, even talking about it makes me want to walk across the room and open my bread drawer.

    Montreal-bagels

The secret to the montreal bagel is the wood oven.

This lip smacking, versatile breakfast-lunch-dinner-or snack food has become more holy than the Catholic Church (get the pun?).

So the question is... what Montreal restaurant bakes the best bagel?

In NO PARTICULAR ORDER, the finalists are...

    (drum roll please) badabadabadabadbadba

  • 1. St–Viateur (263 St-Viateur W., (514) 276-8044)
  • 2. Fairmount (74 Fairmount W., (514) 272-0667)
  • 3. R.E.A.L. Bagel (various locations)
  • 4. DAD’s Bagels (5732 Sherbrooke W., (514) 487-2454)
  • 5. Faubourg’s The Bagel Place (1616 Ste-Catherine W., (514) 931-2827)

SEPTEMBER 2007 UPDATE: My favourite has always been R.E.A.L Bagel, probably because it was the closest bagel place growing up. But does that make it the best... or just the most convenient??

Writing this "best Montreal Restaurant" list got me thinking (and hungry! Very, very hungry), so in September 2007 I decided to become what I'm calling a 'culinary scientist.'

I bought piping hot bagels from each Montreal bagel bakery and invited my friends Greg and Ryan to do a blind taste test.

We chewed. We swallowed. We furiously marked our answers.

Our results may surprise you. They surprised me...

Curious, I did some research on the bagel...

Vegetarian Fare "Show me the lettuce!"

  • 1. Le Commensal (various locations)
  • 2. Aux Vivres (4631 St-Laurent, (514) 842-3479)

  • 5. Lola Rosa (545 Milton, (514) 287-9337)
  • 6. Bonny's Vegetarian and Organic Cuisine (748 Notre-Dame Street West (near Seigneurs and Guy)

    UPDATE: September 2007

Bonny's has re-opened with a bigger menu, bigger venue, and same-old Bonny! I was lucky enough to be among the first in the doors. With a bigger, badder Bonny's, this vegetarian Montreal restaurant is fast bcoming the 'buzz' of the vegetarian community, and a definite contender for best vegetarian restaurant on the island...

And if Le Commensal wants to keep its crown it's going to have to keep one eye on Bonny!
